French lawmakers grant police power to spy on citizens through phones

In addition to being able to remotely activate, access, and record the GPS, microphone, and camera on cell phones of potential suspects, the measure passed by French lawmakers would allow police to spy on people via cars, laptops, and every wirelessly connected device.
Le Monde reported that digital rights advocates, La Quadrature du Net issued a statement critical of the policy, citing infringements on fundamental liberties such as the “right to security, right to a private life, to private correspondence” as well as “the right to come and go freely.”
Encrypted messaging apps and VPN features would not be able to prevent this type of government surveillance. Interestingly, MPs, judges, lawyers, doctors, and journalists would be exempt from this program.
